This is a novel that asks the question–What is the American Dream? Is it about getting rich and powerful? Is it about family, community, comfort? Is it about getting enough to eat and holding a job? It’s different things to different people. In the story I wrote that the dream of wealth and power became so pervasive that it squeezed out the middle class American dream of going as far as you want, having a model family, owning a beautiful home, and never worrying about money. This left a have and have-not world in which you were rich and powerful or you felt this was in reach; or you were unemployed in a world that was willing to feed you to the wolves. Your dream was just to survive.
